About Banyan Tree Cabo Marqués // Perched on the dramatic cliffs of Punta Diamante in Acapulco, overlooking the expansive Pacific Ocean, Banyan Tree Cabo Marqués is a true 5-star paradise. This two year old resort is only 20 minutes away from Alvarez International Airport (ACA) and also close to Acapulco Viejo and the jagged cliffs of La Quebrada, where Acapulco’s famed cliff divers “clavadistas” dive day and night into the sea. An all-villa resort, Banyan Tree Cabo Marqués is on Travel + Leisure’s IT List for 2010 and their renowned Thai restaurant, Saffron, is a winner of the International Star Diamond Award. Set against breathtaking views, the Asian-inspired villas, each come with its own heated infinity plunge pools, overlooking either the ocean, the Puerto Marqués bay, or the lush tropical and peaceful valley. Enjoy a restful day of sunbathing off of your private sun deck, dine on a romantic meal on your veranda, unwind at the award-winning spa, or embark on sailing tour around the bay, there are plenty of ways to relax and experience the beauty of Acapulco.

Villas // With its steep roofs and built on high stilts over dramatic cliffs, the villas start at 2,000 sq. ft. They offer the signature Banyan Tree 5-star comforts and beauty. Each villa has its own heated horizon pool, with a tropical wooden sun deck, and a veranda for private and romantic dining. The mangroves and palm forest surroundings give each villa a feel of endless nature and seclusion. The generous sized bedrooms, with its open walls of glass, let natural light beam in. Oval desks and fainting couches sit perfectly in front of your floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking your view. The spacious bathrooms are outfitted with marble counters, separate sinks, a rainshower, and a separate sunken bath tub (big enough for two.)

In-villa luxuries include a 42"-flat screen LCD TVs, iPod dockets, mini stereo system, complimentary wireless internet connection, and a spacious work table. There are standard features: mini bar, hairdryer and bathrobes, spacious closets, iron and ironing board, telephone, air-conditioning, in-villa safe and each night, turndown service (which includes soothing aromatherapy incense (a different scent every night) and a take-home gift to remind you of your heavenly stay.)

Depending on your choice, villas may offer a view of the Pacific Ocean, the Puerto Marqués bay, or the tropical valley.

Note: Having stayed in an “ocean view” pool villa and a “valley view” pool villa, it is worth the extra dollars to upgrade yourself to an “ocean view,” especially if you plan to sunbathe off your private deck. The “valley view” pool villa feels secluded with its lush surroundings, but it does not get as much direct sunlight. Depending on villa location, there are varying degrees of privacy so, ask upon booking.

Activities // For those looking to stay on property and exercise, walking or jogging along the steep curving paths of the stunning property is a great way to take in the views and tropical setting. There are two swimming pools to choose from, (one over looking the ocean and one right on the cliffs of the bay) each located next to an exceptional restaurant so you can delight in an extraordinary culinary experience or drink while you take a dip in either infinity pool.

For a nice stroll of eating and shopping, visit Acapulco Viejo which is only a 20 minute drive from Banyan Tree. Old Acapulco was best known in the ‘50s for being the playground to Hollywood’s elite.

Also, legendary to Acapulco is watching the Acapulco’s famed cliff divers as they into the sea from the jagged cliffs at La Quebrada. If you go at night, you’ll see the divers holding flickring torches as they make the daring plunge.

The concierge can also arrange a tour of the city, where you get to discover the history behind this once sleepy fishing village and its incarnation into a beach mecca.

If you are looking for more of a flora-and-fauna experience, take a tour of the Barra Coyuca Lagoon. On that excursion, you’ll visit a tropical fruit plantation, then take a trip through the mangroves with a native boat and catch a glimpse of tropical birds and turtles. The tour guide will explain all about the ecology along the lagoon shores.

For a water excursion, across the bay, there is a yacht club where you can rent jetskis and waverunners. For a more romantic time on the sea, the concierge can also arrange a private boat tour that will take you around the coast of Acapulco.

For golf fanatics, there is the close-by Fairmont Princess Hotel Golf Course and the Turtle Dunes Country Club.

The only thing that surpasses Banyan Tree Cabo Marqués’ dramatic sunsets and breathtaking views is their 5–star level of service and attention. This romantic hideaway with its spa-like villas, incredible food, and gorgeous pools is elevated by the detail-oriented and caring staff. Our wonderfully relaxing week long stay ended with a flight that was cancelled when we got to the airport the day of New Year’s Eve. Having already checked out and not knowing when our next flight would be, we called Banyan Tree Cabo Marqués and explained to them our dilemma. Not only did they find a way to accommodate us for an extra two nights, they also generously invited us, as their guests, to their New Year’s Eve extravaganza. Ricardo Suarez and Manuel Silas and their exceptional staff made what could have been a disasterous couple of days feel like a special three extra days in their paradise.

Our favorite moments include: late afternoon snack of fresh tilapia ceviche while sitting on our poolside lounge bed and watching the sunset over the Pacific Ocean, having a couples Thai massage performed by masseuses from Thailand, relaxing in the tranquility of our private pool while staring our at the bay, walking around the property on our way to the cliffside pool or our outdoor seated breakfast, and dining at their authentically Thai restaurant, Saffron.
